More craigslist scammers arrested

Two men arrested in Craigslist scams:
Two men have been arrested in the old selling boxes full of garbage scam. Ansar El Muhammad and Lawyer Dushan McBride have been arrested for selling boxes of trash disguised to look like Playstation 3s, laptops, and TVs on craigslist in the Bay Area of California.

These kinds of scams will probably continue until people smarten up or craigslist stops allowing anonymous ads. I’m not holding my breath on either one.

California tries to get tough on cyberstalking

California eyes stronger cyberstalking laws:
California is looking to strengthen it’s cyberstalking laws after a wave of harassment has taken place on craigslist. In one such incident a 17-year-old girl’s picture and phone number were posted on craigslist with an ad stating that people should call if they’re interested in a good time.

The proposed bill (AB 919) is authored by Republican state Rep. Guy Houston and is designed to prevent individuals from using Web sites such as MySpace.com and Craigslist to deliberately incite harassment or abuse against an individual.

Such harassment can include the posting of digital images or messages on Web sites in an effort to cause fear, harassment or harm to an individual, according to an official description of the bill. The measure would allow California law enforcement officials to pursue stalking charges against people responsible for such messages.

AB 919 will allow for the prosecution of individuals responsible for such acts for the first time, the spokesman said. It is not clear whether new language will be included in the state’s existing cyberstalking laws to accommodate the provisions contained in AB 919 or whether it will be passed as a separate law.

They need to make the penalties worthwhile too. If it’s just a slap on the wrist for these offenses then it’s not worth the time in pursuing the proposed legislation.

Appeal to be filed on sealing of depositions

Columbine parents launch appeal of decision to seal depositions:

As expected some of the parents of Columbine victims have filed a formal notice that they will appeal Judge Lewis Babcock’s decision to have the depositions of the parents of the Columbine killers sealed for 20 years.

Attorney Barry K. Arrington filed the notice of appeal in U.S. District Court on behalf of parents Brian Rohrbough, Susan Petrone and Dawn Anna. The notice does not discuss the grounds for appeal and Arrington did not immediately return a call.

Rohrbough and Petrone are the parents of Daniel Rohrbough and Dawn Anna is the mother of Lauren Townsend. Their children were among 12 students who were killed at Columbine on April 20, 1999.

Judge Babcock’s reasoning for sealing the depositions was to prevent copycats of Columbine. Obviously that didn’t work.

Craigslist: Why bother?

As the saying goes, if it sounds too good to be true: Two men arrested in Craigslist scams.

The scam was pretty simple:

Two men suspected of selling boxes of rubbish designed to look like expensive electronic items to about 100 people throughout the Bay Area have been arrested and are expected to be arraigned this afternoon.

(…)victims agreed to purchase laptop computers, large-screen televisions and Sony PlayStation3 video game consoles from sellers who posted ads on Craigslist, but ended up with boxes of rocks, floor tiles and magazines, Bobbitt said.

If you can’t believe what a bargain you’re getting, you probably aren’t.

Punta Gorda PD reels in another one

Police use MySpace to make pot bust:
The Punta Gorda PD strikes yet again. If this keeps up they’re going to get their own category here at MCS. For those of you new to MCS the Punta Gortda PD is my favorite police department in the U.S. because they keep busting drug dealers and users on MySpace. I think this is their 5th or 6th arrest posted on this site alone.

This time they arrested 19-year-old Christopher Sullivan. According to the article his only friend is Tom so I didn’t bother looking for his MySpace. The details of the arrest are hilarious…

Christopher Sullivan, 19, is the latest to be arrested for trying to sell marijuana to police online.

“He said he had seen the media reports concerning MySpace, and he had a feeling it was a bust but decided to show up anyway,” said Detective Tom Lewis with the Punta Gorda Police Department.

Lewis says Sullivan came to a Sweetbay grocery store parking lot to sell marijuana and because he says he was sick of smoking alone. Instead, he was met by a detective ready to arrest him.

“His initial e-mail to me was that he wanted to hook up because he was sick of smoking marijuana alone. He wanted to meet up so we could smoke together and of course we obliged,” said Lewis.

Sullivan told police that their MySpace profile was very convincing.

You may be a burnout if…you post on MySpace that you’re tired of smoking dope alone.

Green Bay trial delayed

East High School Plot Trial Delayed Until August:

The trial of the three Green Bay East High School plotting suspects has been delayed until August. It has not been delayed in the wake of Virginia Tech but because the prosecution needs time to review new evidence that has been discovered.

Judge J.D. McKay delayed the trial so the State can analyze all of the remaining evidence — specifically, information on Cornell’s computer. McKay said he didn’t want new evidence coming into play in the middle of the trial.

Judge McKay said his decision to the delay the trial was not influenced by the Virginia Tech shootings. In fact, before accepting the State’s motion to delay the trial, he denied a defense motion for a delay based on the argument that the violent attack is still fresh on peoples’ minds.

The trial is set to resume August 13th but I have a feeling they will all cop to pleas by that time.

Boo

Assault accomplice wanted in attempted murder:
Luckily no one was hurt in this story and since no one was hurt it cracks me up to no end. again we have another cautionary tale about using the services listed in the craigslist erotic services section. This time the story takes place in Maryland…

A prostitute and one of her acquaintances allegedly assaulted a man who hired the woman after she posted an advertisement on Craigslist, the Prince George’s County police said.

The man met the woman at a home in the 5100 block of Kenesaw Street in College Park just before 5 a.m. Sunday, and went inside a bedroom, police said. The man heard a door creak, became apprehensive and told the woman he wasn’t interested anymore and started to leave, police said.

The prostitute shoved the man and called for someone named ‘‘Boo,” police said.

The victim heard footsteps coming toward him and ran outside toward his car, police said. As he was trying to get into his car, he heard a gunshot and ran across the street.

Police have identified the man nicknamed ‘‘Boo” as Larry Elliott Anthony, 30, of the same home where the incident happened. A warrant has been issued for his arrest, said Lt. John Hipps, commander of the county police District I Investigative Section.

Anthony has been charged with second-degree attempted murder, first-degree and second-degree assault, use of a handgun in a violent crime and weapons charges, Hipps said. The handgun charge may be amended because Anthony allegedly fired a shotgun, Hipps said.

Just another reason why you should never purchase the services of a craigslist hooker.

Accused cop killer’s lawyer steps down

Montgomery Appointed New Attorney:

The public defender assigned to alleged cop killer Demeatrius Montgomery has stepped down citing conflict of interest…

Jean Lawson, an attorney from the Mecklenburg County Public Defenders Office, was assigned to the case just days after Montgomery was charged.

Jail records show Lawson spoke with her client at the Mecklenburg County jail several times, and even had a conversation that lasted more than an hour. But Lawson’s request to withdraw cites two North Carolina state rules about lawyer conduct, including one that says a lawyer should not represent a client if that representation will hurt another client.

I wonder if her client’s testimony would hurt Montgomery or the other way around.

Quad Cities mutant in hot water

Bettendorf student lists Columbine killers as heroes:

And I’m sure nothing smells worse than a wet mutant.

A Quad Cities area mutant is causing Bettendorf High School some concern because its MySpace lists the Columbine scumbags, Harris and Klebold, as heroes. Now read the following carefully. No legal action has been taken. No disciplinary action was taken by the school. The school merely interviewd the student and notified its parents.

So before you go crying thought police, or censorship, or some other angst ridden crap the school didn’t do anything wrong. Hell, I wish more schools would notify parents when students are found out to be mutants.

I’m curious to know if the parents in this case knew their spawn was a mutant or did they just not care?

Arrest in Mass. school threat

MySpace threats lead to arrest of Methuen girl, 17:
17-year-old Katherine Koontz of Central Catholic High School in Lawrence, Mass. was arrested within the past month for not only leaving threatening notes at her school but for also posting on a MySpace page about how she would kill her classmates.

She’s been released on her own recognizance.
