Pervert off to the slammer:
That’s a great headline. It pulls no punches.
39-year-old Frank Darrin Hansma was given 5 years behind bars for having sex with a 13-year-old boy he met on Nexopia.
Hansma was also placed on the national sex offender registry for 20 years and banned for life from using the Internet to contact children under 14 or working or volunteering at places where there are young people around.
The career criminal is banned as well from going to parks, playgrounds, swimming pools, schools, day cares or any other place where children congregate for 10 years.
Hansma had tried to fight the latter ban, however Judge Larry Anderson noted the 85 convictions on his criminal record and said the rap sheet showed Hansma had a “disregard for humanity” as well as a pattern of dishonesty.
The judge gave Hansma 24 months credit for the 10 months he spent in pre-trial custody at the Edmonton Remand Centre, leaving him three years left to serve.
According to agreed facts, Hansma first met the teen victim on the Edmonton-based Nexopia web site in August 2005 and, while he said he was 35 despite being 38 at the time, he knew throughout that the boy was 13.
Their online conversations culminated in a meeting at Westmount Shopping Centre on Nov. 6, 2005, with a plan to have lunch and see a movie, court heard.
However, after lunch they took a taxi to a downtown hotel where Hansma had booked a room. They watched TV, talked and drank booze and then had sex.
Crown prosecutor Steven Bilodeau said the illicit relationship came to light when the victim’s mother noticed he was not acting like himself and had her cousin look at her son’s e-mails on their computer.
The article doesn’t say what those previous 85 convictions were for. I hope to God they weren’t along the same lines as what he’s been sentenced for. Even if they weren’t 3 years isn’t long enough for a scumbag like this.
