Father killed over MySpace

Police: Teen Killed Dad For Banning MySpace:
15-year-old Hughstan Schlicker of killed his dad over MySpace.

His dad had seen suicide threats that Schlicker had posted on MySpace then took away his internet access.

Schlicker was so addicted to MySpace that he shot and killed his father over it.

Schlicker had posted the threats in January; friends in Florida had seen the postings, talked him out of killing himself and called police. Police said they told Schlicker’s mother about the threats and that she said she wasn’t worried and would lock up any guns in the house.

Schlicker said he often spent entire days on MySpace and couldn’t cope when his father cut off his access to the site.

“It felt like I was stabbed with a knife and it went straight through and … no matter how hard I pulled, I couldn’t pull out the knife,” Schlicker said, according to an interview transcript in the police report.

After the shooting, Schlicker said, he called a female friend and told her he had killed his father and was about to kill himself. Schlicker said she talked him out of it and convinced him to call police instead, according to the report.

Should MySpace be blamed for this? Of course not. This kid obviously had deeper issues than just a MySpace addiction.

It’s a shame a father had to die for what he thought was best for his son.

Schlicker is being charged as an adult.

The wrong person definitely died in this story. Who was the moron who talked this punk out of killing himself?

The bigger issue to this sad story is that the mom didn't take a warning seriously (how do you feel now?) … but even bigger than that – what does this say about the ridiculous dependency on technology, social networking and the internet that the current teen generation has. It’s really out of control. I ranted about this on my blog… feel free to visit (click the name above). But seriously, when someone, anyone, be it one person or a whole generation, is that dependent on something that has zero value in skill development or even simple worthwhile use of time – maybe we should re-evaluate it’s place in society. I believe we’ve done it before with heroin and crack.
Forget the Internet predators; be afraid of your child’s addiction and the fact that their brain may not be developing properly… on many various levels.

And you have a great product too.

As I read this, I'm surrounded by three teenage boys chatting it up with their friends on MySpace.

The only thing is, the kids were allowed to have a MySpace but the FIRST friends they added were ADULT relatives who could monitor their online activity and I HAD to have all their password information. First time I can't log in to check things out, it and the computer goes away.

addicted? More like the kid is crazy. So here is another incident where myspace is completely to blame…i bet.

  • jen

This is just stupid. I mean, really,do any of you believe that this kid killed his father because of myspace. this kid obviously had some much bigger issues.I bet this really had nothing to do with myspace at all.I guarantee you,a lot more is going to come out about this kid,and it will have nothing to do with myspace. There is a much bigger problem here.

I agree with the last comment. Media continuously blames music, or myspace for the actions of fucked up people. They have mental issues. Normal people can be told to get off myspace and not shot someone in the head. It's totally warped that people begin to believe that it's myspace or marliyn manson eg. You need mental issue first min cov.

Jen/Steph… take everything you said, replace the word "MySpace" with "heroin". Read it back to yourself.

    It's the SAME thing.

No one said MySpace killed the father. No one ever BLAMED MySpace… certainly not as much as they blamed drugs and waged war against them. Everyone is acknowledging the kid is effed up and had issues. The problem lies within the addiction that parents today have let their children foster, thinking the addictive substance (MySpace, internet, etc) was harmless. And it may be, but then should we be mentally screening people to see if they are fit to be online… no. Parents just need to be parents and stop acting like being a parent is a hobby. It's a goddamn job. So wake up and do it properly because you can’t afford to fail. If this douchebag’s mom had listened to the warnings, or if the parents both had just done their job better, the situation could have been avoided.

    That’s all I’m saying.

Whats sad is that you are talking about this poor boy. Where any of you there, did any of you live in the house. Just so you all know Hughstan is my cousin and yea it is very sad that My uncle died, but its even more pitiful that you guys have nothing better to do then talk about this boy who clearly needs support and help. And as for the ones on here talking bad about the family and saying that Hughstan should be the one thats dead well grow up seriously, there is a much bigger issue at hand then you people worrying about your beloved myspace. The family is in mourning and Hughstan will have to face whatever comes his way, but as for you people– stop minding yourself with other peoples business definately when you know nothing at all. He is a teenage boy who is in need of help, but that doesnt mean that he should be dead. R.I.P uncle skeet we love and miss u!

i really love how everyone who is related to him can justify what he did.
okay. so he didnt do drugs.
    okay so he's mentally unstable.
    blahblahblah

he killed another one of your relatives. it shouldnt matter how much you love or care about him. he killed his own dad…
personally… i think if someone can do that….they are a little past "mentally unstable"
    or "needing help"

Unfortunately, fam/friends of the accused will all too often show up here to try and justify and/or downplay their crime…the cases of Randall Shesto and Joseph Nagle/Cheyenne Blanton stand out as prime examples on the site.

  • laura schlicker &quo

u all can shove all the shit that u have to scoop …up ur self rightouses ass's. my lil bro knows what the fuck he did…okay and he has to live with that for the rest of his life.. there is no need for any of you mother fuckers to be on here talking shit about him or what he did. if he wasnt in the joint you sure the fuck wouldnt be talking now would you? and y'all can back the fuck off of my family for placeing thier opions… u seem to think that u can so y cant they?? think about it

  • Chuck D.

News flash: this is a crime blog, and talking about these issues is what we do…you want sympathy, go to an online support group.

  • brittany

    okay laura.

well your brother BETTER know what he did.
yes you deserve to have an opinion.
but if some random stranger came and shot your dad wouldnt you want them to have a consequence???
but because he's your brother you think he should get off easy? that makes no sense. love him all you want but why the hell should he get away with murder? and i know if i was you i'd be pissed. its your dad!
and he killed him because of a myspace issue?
    you're right. crime totally justified.

  • Chuck D.

Very well said, Brittany…oh, and if you do a search of the East Valley Tribune's site, you'll find a fascinating article about how Laura tried (unsuccessfully) to get her brother's sentence reduced…I'd post the link, but for some reason, any posts containing URLs have to wait awhile for approval before going through.
