Rash of craigslist robberies in DeKalb County

DeKalb Warns Citizens About Craigslist:

DeKalb cops probe 13 Craigslist robberies:

Craigslist ads linked to crimes against potential DeKalb buyers:

DeKalb County, Georgia has had 13 craigslist related robberies since the start of the year. The robberies target people who are selling iPhones, Sony PSPs and other electronics. The suspect’s names have not been released yet because the investigation is ongoing.

I did two interviews yesterday with Atlanta area newspapers yesterday and when I was told that DeKalb County had 13 craigslist robberies since January I was surprised. I told the reporter that many robberies in one location is something more akin to cities like San Francisco or Seattle.

The DeKalb County Police gave the following tips to avoid being robbed while doing business on craigslist.

• Set meetings during daylight hours

• Meet in public places

• Never meet alone

• Be aware of your surroundings at all times

Don’t forget my personal favorite of making the transaction in front of the police station. Check with your local police department first before doing this.

Also the 3rd article link I posted is one of the articles that I was interviewed for and while I appreciate the AJC interviewing me I did want to make a clarification. The article stated that I’ve tracked over two dozen craigslist robberies on the site. I did say that there were dozens of robberies but my intention was to stress multiple dozens not just two.

Everything else I said was dead on. If craigslist didn’t insist on allowing their users total anonymity the crime on their site would be cut in half.

As usual craigslist did not respond to the AJC.
