It’s no secret that I haven’t been a big fan of the whole reboot thing. However I love the idea of the golden age heroes getting their own reboot. In this issue we get the new origin of Jay Garrick as The Flash. This issue isn’t without controversy though as it is the issue that has revealed that the soon to be Green Lantern of Earth 2, Alan Scott, is gay.
I’ve been giving DC a lot of shit lately for exploiting Batwoman’s sexual orientation and using it more to titillate than anything. I still stand by that but before I said that they would never have a scene where a male gay couple are kissing. Well, I now have to eat those words because they showed that in this issue and they handled it with class too as to not make Alan Scott a flaming parody of gay men. Now if they would only handle Batwoman with such class.
Another controversy in comic circles is the ‘Before Watchmen’ titles as Watchmen has been long considered untouchable to any other writer besides Alan Moore. Well DC comics said fuck that noise and decided to put out titles about Watchmen that take place prior to the infamous graphic novel. This week, Minutemen came out telling the stories of the WW II era heroes of the Watchmen universe and I thought it was really good. I mean nothing will ever be as good as the original but as a companion piece so far the news is good on Before Watchmen. So stop being such a fanboy.
