Six Degrees of Dio: Guns N Roses

I just realized I didn’t do a 6DOD post last week. My bad.

Anyway this week’s subject is Guns N Roses. While Axl deservedly gets a lot of crap GNR were actually a trendsetting band when they hit first hit the national scene in the late 80s. At the time the genre had grown stale and GNR came out with a sound that punched you in the face, nailed your girlfriend and you were happy about it. Unfortunately their meteoric rise to success led to an equally bombastic fall from grace most notably from Axl Rose’s diva-like behavior.

Cool Story Bro time. In the early 90s I saw the triple bill of Metallica, GNR and Faith No More at Giants Stadium. MY girlfriend at the time was a huge GNR fan. I was more of a Metallica fan at the time. GNR was the headline and I told my girlfriend “That’s great, we can leave after Metallica and miss the traffic.” She wasn’t having any of that.

Of course when it came time for GNR to come on they were an hour late and they only played half their set before some object from the crowd grazed Axl. I mean it was New Jersey after all. That’s how they show that they like you. Axl threw a hissy fit and stormed off stage. I grabbed my girlfriend by the arm and said “That’s it. We’re out of here.” I was not about to be caught in a New Jersey riot.

My point is if you treat your fans like shit they will be quick to turn on you. Ironic how Metallica was on that bill too.

Anyway GNR has a surprisingly short trip to Dio.

Slash of GNR played in Slash’s Snakepit with drummer Brian Tichy who has toured with Ozzy Osbourne. And once again from Ozzy we take our usual route from Ozzy to Sabbath to Dio. Legitimately I could call this the 6 Degrees of Ozzy but Dio is a hell of a lot cooler and more talented.

Anyway here’s my Favorite GNR song Rocket Queen.
