The article I linked to is actually about the disparity in tow different incidences of violence in Winston-Salem, NC area schools. One of which being the recent shooting at Carver High School. However it allows me to bring up a point that I’ve been wanting to talk about for a while. I’m not the first person to say this but it needs to be constantly repeated in my opinion. Are you ready? Here goes…
Security procedures are mostly for show.
What do I mean by that? Let’s take the two places that are supposed to be the mist secure, airports and schools.
First let’s take a look at airports. Ever since 9/11 airport security has been reactive and is mostly pointless. After 9/11 box cutters were banned from flights. After the shoe bomber we had to take off our shoes at the security line. After the underwear bomber came the full body scanners. While there has been no major terrorist attacks or hijackings in that time more than once people have shown that if someone was really determined to and had more than two brain cells to rub together a successful attack could be perpetrated in the air.
With schools the big security item is the metal detector. It’s supposed to catch guns from coming into the schools. The problem is they don’t really stop anyone. Jeff Weise didn’t let a metal detector stop him from going on to kill at Red Lake High School. At Columbine the attacks started from outside of the school. If there would have been detectors there at that time they would have been ineffective as well.
Does this mean we’re all doomed to die in either a terrorist attack in a plane or a school shooting? No, the reality is the odds of those happening to any one individual are roughly the same as winning the lottery except when it does happen it affects us all.
