Ronnie James Dio’s last performance

The guys over at black-sabbath.com have posted their tribute to the late Ronnie James Dio including footage from his last performance.

The show was in my old stomping grounds of Atlantic City, NJ with Heaven and Hell. Of course no one knew at the time that it would be his last performance.

Personally I had not seen Dio perform live in any capacity since 1990 during the Lock up The Wolves tour and I wish I would have seen him perform since then.

L.A. declares 5/30 Dio Day

City Declares May 30 ‘Ronnie James Dio Day’:

I never liked the city of Los Angeles. I don’t mean the people. I actually found the people out there to be actually very friendly. I just never liked the city itself. I was out there on business about 15 years ago and I just didn’t really care for the city.

However I may need to rethink my stance on that as L.A. may now be the coolest city in the world as they have proclaimed May 30th from now and in perpetuity Ronnie James Dio day in recognition of his long and storied career in metal.

I now have a high metal holiday.

All hail his name. m/

Dio 5:30

The Dio Memorial

Fans gather to remember Ronnie James Dio:

This is a surprisingly good article from the AP about the memorial service held for Ronnie James Dio held this past weekend.

If I had the cash myself and my lovely and talented wife Jade would have been there ourselves.

While the slew of musicians were there was an impressive list I’d rather focus on Ronnie’s son Dan Padavona and what he had to tell the crowd…

Dio’s son, Dan Padavona, cautioned the memorial crowd to be screened regularly by a doctor and take care of themselves, something he said his father did not do.

“I beg you not to make the same mistake my dad made,” said Padavona. “For dad, the show always had to go on. He ignored the warning signs for years, and all along the cancer was growing and mutating from something that was probably easily defeatable into a monster which even Dio couldn’t slay.”

Maybe in death Ronnie will be able to save some lives.

The Master has returned home: Ronnie James Dio has passed away

Legendary Heavy Metal Vocalist RONNIE JAMES DIO Dies:

Last night it started out as a hoax that Ronnie James Dio had died. Then his wife Wendy Dio said that Ronnie was not in good shape but he was still alive.

Now it has been announced that my one true musical idol has passed away after his battle with stomach cancer exactly a month since the death of my only other metal hero Peter Steele had died.

In my opinion Ronnie James Dio had a way of crafting lyrics that no other mortal possessed and was the main influence to my own music writing style.

And he hadn’t lost a step since his first days with Rainbow.

In 2009 his album with Heaven and Hell was as still as good as the original Heaven and Hell album by Black Sabbath in 1980.

He had so much more music to give.

I do have other metal heroes but they are only lesser idols compared to Ronnie James Dio.

You will be missed terribly.

All hail his name. m/

R.I.P. Peter Steele

Peter Steele, Type O Negative Singer, Has Died:

Metal has lost one of its most distinct and creative voices with the passing of Type O Negative bassist and frontman Peter Steele.

In the pantheon of my metal gods Peter was only second behind Ronnie James Dio.

When I was severely suffering from depression I found comfort in Steele’s dark lyrics which in turned influenced my own set of lyrics that used to be posted on these pages. That also helped me deal immensely with my depression until I was able to finally get help.

I was fortunate enough to catch Type O negative in concert not too long ago. I feel even more fortunate now that I got to see them live. During the concert here in Charlotte, NC Pete said “Yeah, we’re from the south. SOUTH FUCKIN’ BROOKLYN. Which struck me as funny because I use the same line except South Jersey instead.

I’m listening to TON on my MP3 player right now and even though it should be obvious I’m amazed at how ironic the song titles have become such as Everything Dies and Everyone I Love is Dead and Dead Again.

When I heard the first rumblings of his passing I thought it was just another internet rumor it wasn’t until I saw it confirmed by TON’s record company did I realize that it was in fact true.

You will be missed and my thoughts and prayers go out to Peter Steele’s friends and family.

I will be wearing my Carnivore shirt in his honor tomorrow.

Lou Albano dead at 76

Remembering Capt. Lou Albano:

Possibly the greatest manager in the history of professional wrestling has passed away. The Captain Lou Albano has died at the age of 76 from natural causes.

When I first started watching pro wrestling in the early 80′s Capt. Lou managed some guys I actually feared like the Wild Samoans and Don Muraco. I was a little afraid of Albano himself considering his wild looks and the fact that I was a sheltered kid.

My prayers and condolences go out to the friends and family of Captain Lou. Here’s hoping he’s managing the greatest stable at that squared circle in the sky.

Eddie Guerrero found dead

WWE Wrestler found dead in Minneapolis:

World Wrestling Entertainment wrestler Eddie Guerrero was found dead in his hotel room in Minneapolis, the organization said Sunday.

Guerrero, 38, was found at the Marriott City Center in downtown Minneapolis. He was in town for Sunday night’s “WWE Supershow” TV taping at Target Center.

Police were called to the hotel just after 7:30 a.m. and attempts were made to revive the wrestler, Minneapolis Police Department spokesperson Ron Reier said.

The Hennepin County Medical Examiner was at the hotel. Additional information on Guerrero’s death was not immediately available.

If you ever wanted to see Eddie wrestle at his best try to find tapes of the matches he had with Dean Malenko back in their ECW days.

Eddie had battled drug and alcohol addiction before in his life. In recent years he had “turned his life over to the Lord” as they say. I hope to God that his death wasn’t drug related.

My thoughts and prayers go out to the friends and family of Eddie Guerrero. He will be missed.

Requiem for The Riddler

Frank Gorshin who played The Riddler on the Batman TV series from the 60′s has passed away at the age of 72. Frank Gorshin was also an accomplished impressionist. When I was a kid Frank Gorshin’s Riddler was always my favorite villain on the Batman series. My condolences go out to his friends and family. Never again will we hear “Riddle me this Batman”. A sad day indeed.

Pope John Paul II (Karol Jozef Wojtyla) 1920-2005

After 26-year reign, pontiff dies at 84:

Whatever I could say about him wouldn’t be enough nor would it do him justice. So I offer my prayers and condolences to his friends and family and to not only the Catholic community worldwide but also to the people of other faiths that his life has touched. I also pray for the strength of the next man to become Pope and that he has the resolve to be as good a man as Pope John Paul II was.

Goodbye Johnny

Johnny Carson, late-night TV legend, dies at 79:

Another one of the icons of my childhood passed away today. As we all know by now Johnny Carson died today. When I was a kid one of the biggest treats in the world was staying up late to watch The Tonight Show with Johnny Carson. It meant either we didn’t have school the next day or we were getting away with staying up late. Not to mention one of the funniest jokes I ever heard was from Johnny Carson. He was doing his Carnac bit and the answer was “Sis Boom Bah”. The question was “What sound does a sheep make when it explodes?” I don’t think I ever laughed that hard in my entire life. My prayers and condolences go out to his family and friends.
