Sandy Hook Shooter Adam Lanza Had No Drugs, Alcohol In System:

Last week it was leaked by an anonymous official attached to the Sandy Hook investigation that Adam Lanza’s toxicology report did not turn up any illegal or prescription drugs in his system. As I’ve posted before usually charlatans and quacks come out after a school shooting and are quick to blame anti-depressants as the real motive behind these kinds of shootings. Dealing with them is kind of like dealing with conspiracy theorists. If the suspect was on anti-depressants the shooting was caused by the meds. If the shooter wasn’t on any meds then the shooting must have happened because he went off his meds. Why can’t it just ever be that he was a crazy bastard?

It’s no secret that I am a firm advocate of medical science and anti-depressants. As I’ve said numerous times an anti-depressant basically turned my life around. Have I had a bad reaction to some? Yes, I have. Unfortunately finding the right one can be a trial and error kind of process. However when I did have a bad reaction the only person I wanted to hurt was myself. If, and that’s a mighty big if, a prescription medication causes someone to murder it’s more than likely that person had murderous intentions to begin with.

As far as I’m concerned the people who blame these things on anti-depressants are on the same level of people who believe vaccines cause autism. Both are misinformed and are wallowing in their ignorance.

The Lanza search warrants

Newtown Killer’s Obsessions, in Chilling Detail:

The search warrants for the school shooting at Sandy Hook Elementary School in Newtown, Connecticut were made public on Thursday. You can read the article for the entire list of what they found at the home of Adam Lanza. I’m just going to over a few of the things that caught my attention.

The amount of weaponry that was found leads me to believe that Nancy Lanza may have just been spoiling her son with his obsession. I’ve posted about something similar in the stabbing of James Alenson by John Odgren in the Lincoln-Sudbury Regional High stabbing. Odgren was allowed to keep a vast knife collection and stabbed a random target to death in his high school bathroom. The similarities continue between Odgren and Lanza as books on Autism and Asperger’s were found in the Lanza household. As I have mentioned several times in the past people like Odgren and Lanza are not indicative of all Asperger’s patients. They’re not all potential killers waiting to explode and to use Asperger’s as an excuse or defense for murder is just a way of spreading F.U.D.

Here I’m going to show my true ignorance about firearms. The reports say that Lanza was in possession of 10 magazines that held 30 rounds each for the Bushmaster he used in the killings. I have to ask is there any civilian reason for having that many magazines? Are they interchangeable with other firearms? Again, this leads me to believe that Lanza was just a spoiled brat.

There are conflicting reports about whether Lanza was bullied or not while in school. Now before you start the pity party for Lanza let’s remember that he was 20-years-old when he committed mass murder and had been out of school since 10th grade. If you’re holding on to a bullying grudge for that long not only are you in desperate need of mental help but you’re letting your bullies win by letting them live in your head rent free.

Also found at the Lanza home was a crime scene photo of a victim that was covered in blood and draped in plastic and a newspaper clipping about the shooting at Northern Illinois University. Between the NIU clipping, the spreadsheet and the documentation the Nickel Mines shooting I’m starting to lean towards Lanza being nothing more than a copycat killer. I wouldn’t be surprised if it turned out that Lanza was a card-carrying mutant. For those of you new to the site that’s the term I sue for people who are admirers of school shooters, especially the Columbine cowards.

And once again the spectre of video games, especially Call of Duty, has been brought up. Video games did not cause Adam Lanza or anybody else to kill. Call of Duty is one of the most popular games in modern-day video game history and there have not been a rash of killings because of this or any other game. They are not ‘murder-simulators’ as some people like to call them. They don’t teach you how to shoot or how to handle a gun unless your gun is controlled by an Xbox controller.

There is only one thing responsible for the senseless death and tragedy at Newtown and that was Adam Lanza and nothing else. While we may never know his actual motive it’s pointless trying to blame guns or video games or other inanimate objects. Evil is created in the mind not through a lifeless hunk of metal or plastic.

7′ x 4′ spreadsheet suggests Lanza planned Newtown massacre for years

Lupica: Morbid find suggests murder-obsessed gunman Adam Lanza plotted Newtown, Conn.’s Sandy Hook massacre for years:

Source: Lanza studied previous mass killings:

Police Not Challenging Report Adam Lanza Planned Newtown Massacre on Spreadsheet:

In my previous post about Sandy Hook murderer Adam Lanza I posted about how the Connecticut State Police denied reports that Lanza was influenced by Norwegian mass murderer Anders Breivik. It turns out that was partially true. Lanza wasn’t just influenced by Breivik but by at least 500 mass murderers from the US and abroad.

According to reports Lanza had a spreadsheet that was 7 feet by 4 feet that included the names of at least 500 mass murderers. The list was so detailed with body counts and weapon types that some investigators and criminal experts are saying that Lanza’s research mirrored that of a doctoral thesis. This more than dispels my hypothesis that Lanza snapped after his mother, Nancy Lanza, tried to get him to live a more social lifestyle.

I tried to find at least a partial list of the names on the spreadsheet but so far the only ones mentioned in the media were those of Breivik himself and Charles Carl Roberts IV. Roberts was the one who stormed the Amish school in Nickel Mines, Pennsylvania where he made the male students leave the school before shooting at least a dozen girls killing five.

stick

What really burns my ass about this story is that too many people who I thought would know better keep referring to Lanza’s spreadsheet as a score card and comparing it to the video games that Lanza liked to play. Lanza’s actions were that of a demented coward and not that of your typical gamer. The first person shooters that Lanza liked to play are rated M meaning that they are not intended for children under 17. Lanza was 20. Are lawmakers going to try to regulate R-Rated movies? I would say violent movies are more of an influence for violent crimes than video games not to mention that art imitates life not the other way around. If kids are getting their hands on these violent video games then it’s the fault of the parents and not the video game makers. I’m a first generation gamer. I got my fist gaming console in the late 1970s and have been playing games ever since. I’ve played first person shooters and violent survival horror games and the last time I checked I haven’t killed anybody nor had the desire to. MOst gamers who play these games couldn’t work an actual gun if their Cheeto stained lives depended on it. Let’s not forget that Nancy Lanza was the one who owned the guns used in the massacre and she often took her son to the shooting range. Whether the video games sparked Lanza’s interest in the guns is of no consequence.

14 years ago people said the same thing about the game Doom and the Columbine shooters. That assertion turned out to be wrong and this one is too.

I am far from trying to defend Adam Lanza. He is just another coward in an all too long line of cowards who thought he would be a big man by shooting defenseless children. Personally I hope that he is rotting in hell. However it was not video games that drove him to kill. Lanza was just a copycat trying to make a name for himself.

Conn. police dismiss reports that say Adam Lanza was influenced by Norwegian massacre

Adam Lanza

Police dismiss report suggesting Adam Lanza wanted to top Norway death toll:

Recently CBS News released a report citing ‘sources close to the investigation’ that Sandy Hook gunman Adam Lanza was trying for a higher body count than that of Anders Breivik. Breivik killed 77 people in Norway when he bombed government buildings and went on a shooting spree at a youth camp during 2011 in Norway.

The report also states that Lanza targeted Sandy Hook Elementary because it was the easiest target with the largest number of people nearby and that Lanza heavily influenced by ‘violent video games’.

After CBS ran this story it caught like wildfire across the media landscape. Here’s the thing though. None of it may turn out to be true.

What’s being buried in most articles is that the Connecticut State Police are dismissing these allegations.

“This is not official Connecticut State Police information and is someone’s speculation regarding the case,” Connecticut State Police Lieutenant Paul Vance told Reuters in an email statement.

When asked if the CBS report was in any way accurate, Lt. Vance responded, “No.”

The CBS report offers no reason why the source believed that these were the reasons by the Sandy Hook shootings but once again why let facts get in the way of good copy.

The genetics of evil?

Adam Lanza

Adam Lanza

My knowledge of genetics is limited to say the least, and by limited I mean non-existent. However I am not above making an ass out of myself in the sake of spouting my opinion. So if anyone out there is a geneticist and wants to tell me how much of a dumbass I am please feel free.

In the wake of the Sandy Hook shooting a study was started to look into the genetic make up of Newtown gunman Adam Lanza to see if there was anything in his DNA that would make him prone to the brutality that he committed. Call me a Luddite if you wish but I hate this idea for two reasons.

Let’s just say that something is found in Lanza’s DNA that was also found in the DNA of other mass killers. The first thing that comes to my mind is that every criminal defense attorney in the world will have their clients tested and will use this in their defenses stating “You honor, my client couldn’t help himself. He has the evil gene”. And as we all know in today’s society it’s not about personal responsibility but what they can get away with. Then we’ll have mass murderers walking free claiming their rights have been violated if they’re arrested for their crimes.

My other fear is that this ‘evil gene’ is discovered but not everyone that has it ever goes on to commit jaywalking let alone mass murder. But why take that chance? If you’re a family expecting a newborn and the genetic testing turns up the ‘evil gene’ why take chances? Just end the life before it even begins. Sure that’s called eugenics but why should a practice endorsed by one of history’s greatest monsters inconvenience your life. So what if it’s only a slim chance he could turn out to be the killer? Pregnancies have been terminated for much more trivial reasons such as possible physical defects this is actually helping the world right?

My last fear that anyone possibly carrying this gene that actually survived birth would be stigmatized for the rest of their lives if word ever got that they had it.

I’m all for using every method at our scientific disposal of preventing further tragedies like Newtown but unfortunately not everyone in our society is mentally capable of grasping what the results of any of these findings might be. In our society we are too often ruled by knee jerk emotion rather than calm analysis.

More Newtown news, opinion and myth

Adam Lanza

Adam Lanza

Sorry, I didn’t mean to go a week without posting but real life responsibilities and all that. Anyway there hasn’t been a whole lot of worthwhile news out of Newtown in the past week even though the media seems to think that his hair stylist’s opinion is a big deal.

MOTIVE: Some less reputable websites and news outlets have been saying that the reason Adam Lanza went on a rampage was because his mother, Nancy Lanza, was looking to have him committed. According to the New York Daily news that is not the case

The friend also rejected a report that Nancy was planning to have her son committed to a psychiatric facility.

“Nancy was so dedicated to Adam,” the friend said. “She would never send him away. She just couldn’t do that.”

As a matter of fact I think it was quite the opposite to why Lanza went on his rampage. By most Nancy Lanza was actually trying to integrate her son more into the real word by trying to get him to attend a university. Considering how brilliant he supposedly was I doubt he would have a hard time getting into one. However Lanza was more happy being a virtual shut in playing video games in his mom basement. That’s not a rip, he actually played video games in the basement. My thoughts are at this point is that he resented his mother from trying to tear him away from his comfortable surroundings. At least that’s why I think he shot his mother in the face four times. I still have no idea why he would then go on to attack the school. But it does show that like every other school shooter or would be school shooter he’s just another self-entitled loser who blamed everyone else for their own failures.

COPS IN SCHOOLS: I have nothing against the NRA per se but it seems that their president Wayne LaPierre is somewhat out of touch with the real world. Then again I shouldn’t be surprised because LaPierre is just another clueless politician except the office he holds isn’t public. More cops in schools is not only impractical it’s expensive and unfeasible.

As has been mentioned in the press lately there was an armed officer at Columbine, that didn’t stop the shooters. I’ll add to that, there was an armed guard and metal detectors at Red Lake High School. The metal detectors did not stop Jeff Weise and the armed guard ended up dead. In the less publicized Socastee High School shooting the school’s resource officer was the first target and only by the grace of God wasn’t killed. While these measures do help to some degree they are not the be all and end all of preventing school shootings.

BULLETPROOF BACKPACKS FOR KIDS: Seriously? This is the ultimate in fear mongering. First off even though it’s all over the news the odds of your child being killed in a school shooting are like that of winning the lottery, relatively low. Not only that I believe that the backpacks would be mostly ineffective in a real life situation. I mean they may look impressive but let’s look at this realistically.

The backpacks are kind of like taking a self-defense class. It only works if the attacker attacks in such a way that would make your defense the most effective. In the case of the backpacks you have to be face to face with the gunmen. If he is behind you then you’re screwed. Also kids don’t always have their backpacks within arm’s reach throughout the school day. Not to mention that kids are kids. If this think is even relatively heavy they’ll just leave it in their lockers. Again while it may be somewhat protective in reality you’ll just be out a few hundred bucks.

VIDEO GAMES: Again, seriously? Do we have to go through this crap again? The people who believe that violent video games cause kids to kill remind me of the people who refuse to vaccinate their kids. There is absolutely no evidence that video games cause anyone to be violent. Those killers who have played video games are usually already violent to begin with.

More thoughts on Newtown

Nancy Lanza

Nancy Lanza

I’m a little scatterbrained trying to get this post together so you may have to bear with me if it seems a little disorganized but there’s a lot more ground I’d like to cover.

First up a little news. We may never know the motive behind why Adam Lanza decided to attack Sandy Hook Elementary. The New York Times is reporting that Adam Lanza had no real connection to the school….

There was “no connection” between Adam Lanza and Sandy Hook Elementary School, a Connecticut State Police spokesman said Monday afternoon. There had been earlier reports that Mr. Lanza had attended the school as a child. It was not immediately clear if “no connection” meant that Mr. Lanza had not attended the school.

On top of that Nancy Lanza was not nor has ever been a teacher at the school.

Meanwhile The Wall Street Journal is reporting that Adam Lanza had smashed his computer to bits prior to the tragedy possibly to thwart the investigation into the shooting…

The damaged evidence raised the possibility that Mr. Lanza’s rampage may have been premeditated and not a result of a spontaneous decision.

Lastly there is NO TRUTH to the RUMOR that Adam Lanza got into a fight with four teachers at the school the day before the killings…

[Updated at 6:22 p.m. ET] Earlier reports that the suspected shooter, Adam Lanza, had an altercation with four adults at the school on Thursday have been investigated and are not accurate, according to a law enforcement source with knowledge of the investigation.

Lt. J. Paul Vance of the Connecticut State Police noted in a news conference Saturday that he knew of no reports about Lanza being involved in any altercations at the school.

Remember this one kids, it becomes important later.

Now on to the opinion…

NANCY LANZA: I’m usually the first person to jump on the parents of a school shooter if they turned a blind eye to the warning signs. I can’t do that in this case. By all accounts Nancy Lanza was more involved in her son’s life than most parents that don’t have a special needs child are. She was willing to pull up roots and move to wherever Adam wanted to go to college just to make sure he could get a good start on a new life. So even I was taken aback when I saw some Nancy Lanza hate on the internet today. I’m hoping it’s just from a small and ignorant minority. By all accounts she was her son’s greatest ally and she was shot in the face repeatedly for it.

MORE ON GUNS: Something I forgot to mention about arming teacher’s in yesterday’s post. If you arm all the teachers with firearms then all those guns are nothing more than a shopping list for a potential school shooter. If school shooters can obtain weapons through straw man gun purchases or steal them from their parents lifting one from a teacher would be no hard challenge. Arming teachers would only work in a perfect world and ours is far from perfect.

COPYCATS: I’m not going to post about ever loser that has made a threat on Facebook or to their wives or whatever in the wake of Newtown. These are the people who are actually looking for some kind of fame. Unless it was a credible threat I will not be posting about those jackholes here.

BLOGGERS BEING ASSHOLES AND SPREADING MYTHS: Earlier today I was reading an L.A. Times article about Dave Cullen’s book Columbine. In it it’s mentioned that reporting about Columbine was like playing a game of Telephone. If that’s the case (and it was) the reporting out of Newtown was like playing a game of Crappy Tracfone While Going Through A Tunnel In A Lead Lined Truck. So much misinformation was reported about Newtown and just seems to now being perpetuated by some bloggers. One blogger that I used to have a modicum of respect for is still posting that Lanza was at the school the day before the shootings. The only ‘news’ outlets that are still clinging to that part of the story are British tabloids and gossip blogs. This was also a blogger who laid the blame squarely at the feet of Nancy Lanza without hesitation. Another blogger I used to have respect for said that we need to round up all the ‘Aspies’ and put them in a concentration camp further disseminating a myth that Asperger’s automatically makes you a potential killer. (Please see my mea culpa in the comments.)

Granted there’s no school you have to go to in order to become a blogger but some of us actually take pride in our work and to see hacks like this doing a disservice to everybody makes all of us look bad.

One of my blogging mentors once told me controversial but be yourself. If these bloggers are being controversial for the sake of controversy then they’re just page count whores. If they are being true to themselves then I feel sorry for them for keeping themselves in such a state of ignorance.

The Sandy Hook Elementary School shooting

sandyhook

We all know what happened by now, there’s no need for me to rehash it. Instead I’m going to address some things about Friday’s tragedy. Where to start is the only problem.

MENTAL HEALTH: First I want to address the whole Asperger’s issue. It’s being reported that Adam Lanza may have had Asperger’s syndrome which is a disorder on the Autism scale. As I’ve said multiple times on this site Asperger’s does not impair the sufferers ability to tell right from wrong. Several school killers and plotters have tried using Asperger’s as a defense. The one that leaps to mind is John Odgren who stabbed his classmate to death, James Alenson, at their Massachusetts high school. He was sentenced to life. To my recollection and through the stories that I’ve posted on this site no suspect ever claiming Asperger’s as a defense was ever acquitted.

My greatest fear is that with all these claims of Asperger’s as a criminal defense would not only lead to legitimate Asperger’s sufferers being labeled as potential mass murderers but that an Asperger’s defense will eventually lead to killers going free just because some quack testifies that they have Asperger’s. Not to mention that Asperger’s is not a mental disorder but a neurological one.

The other thing people have been saying in the wake of this tragedy is that it highlights the lack of mental healthcare in this country. That couldn’t be any further from the truth. As someone who has a mental illness I was able to get as much help as I needed. The problem was it’s not an overnight fix. It took years for me to finally get the right treatment and I’m a much better person because of it. There is no quick fix and a lot of people with mental illnesses get frustrated and impatient in trying to find the right help.

Another issue is that when people are receiving the right treatment start feeling better than think that they don’t need the treatment anymore and stop. Again this isn’t like a cold where you can just take some pills for a few days and everything is ok. Mental health issues can be a lifelong matter that you may have to deal with.

Also in this day and age there is still an issue of social stigma where mental health issues are concerned. Some of the more ignorant among us think there’s some kind of weakness in admitting that they have mental issues or see someone with mental issues as damaged goods and beyond repair.

Lastly there is a conflict in this country between mental health and civil rights. Unless someone is an immediate danger to themselves and others they cannot be forced to undergo treatment. Adam Lanza was 20 years old. By all rights he could not be forced to undergo any treatment if he didn’t want to as a legal adult.

There is no perfect solution when it comes to mental healthcare and acts of extreme violence. What the country needs is more education however too many people are too entrenched in their beliefs rather than facts.

GUNS: One of the more pro-gun arguments I saw on Friday and yesterday is that our teachers should be armed. One of the more frequent arguments I saw in this regard is that Israeli teachers are armed and the last school shooting there was 39 years ago that was committed by Palestinian terrorists. Here’s the parts that they’re leaving out in that argument. In Israel all citizens are required to serve in the military so they actually receive training in not only the weapons but in situations like an attack on a school. The other thing is that Israel is a country that is constantly at war and under attack. That would never work in the US. First off required military service will never happen in this country secondly can you imagine trying to tell the teachers’ unions in this country that they’ll be required to not only carry firearms but to undergo training in them? It’ll never happen. Also with no offense to teachers some of them among you are not the most outstanding citizens. We can’t hardly go a week without hearing about some teacher that was engaged in illegal activity usually involving one of their students. Now give them guns. Yeah, I don’t think so.

The anti-gun argument was about the ease of which American citizens have access to guns. By most accounts Nancy Lanza was a responsible gun owner and avid collector. I don’t know about the laws in Connecticut but if they’re anything like the gun laws in New Jersey it probably takes an act of God before you can own a gun. There is no pattern in school shootings on whether or not the guns were obtained illegally or not. In Columbine and Red Lake the guns were obtained illegally, in Virginia Tech and NIU they were not.

There is also a lot of ignorance when it comes to guns as well. A lot of people do not know what the terms in relation to guns mean. Some people will hear terms like automatic, semi-automatic and assault rifle and automatically think we’re talking about machine guns. Machine guns are fully automatic by the way and are illegal to own anywhere in this country if memory serves me right. The three types of guns I mentioned all have one thing in common. One trigger pull means one bullet.

Again when it comes to solving gun crimes in this country there are no easy answers. You can’t take the guns away from responsible citizens until you do something about all the illegal guns that are out there. Solve that problem and you probably have a Nobel prize on your way.

FAME/INFAMY: Another thing I noticed in the past couple of days were people saying that Adam Lanza’s name should never be published as it gives them the fame or infamy that they were looking for. I wholeheartedly disagree with this. I think that history’s most vile monsters should never be forgotten. In my opinion it’s similar to those who forget the past are doomed to repeat it.

Also let’s look at this realistically. Prior to Friday in my opinion there were four major school shootings in what I call the modern era. There was Columbine, Red Lake, NIU, and Virginia Tech. If you went up to the average person on the street not only would I doubt that they would be able to tell you who the shooters were in those instances most of them probably couldn’t even tell you that there we’re shootings at Red Lake or NIU. Most people only know the names of the most infamous of criminals. They remember names like Lee Harvey Oswald, Jeffrey Dahmer, Ted Bundy, Timothy McVeigh, Charles, Manson, Osama Bin Laden and the like. I doubt most anyone could name Jeff Weise or Stephen Kazmierczak. For most of these shooters their ‘fame’ is fleeting at best. Even if Adam Lanza did want fame there’s not a lot he can do with it from hell.

MISINFORMATION: Nobody should be really surprised about this one. We live in a society where we need information now regardless of whether or not it’s correct. Somebody on Twitter said that they have never seen the media act so irresponsibly in a time of tragedy before. I replied back to them, I have, it was 13 years ago. How much misinformation was reported at the time of Columbine that still persist as pervasive myths today. In that time the national media really hasn’t learned anything and I doubt they ever will. Journalism in its myriad forms is not about reporting the truth anymore, it’s about being first and getting as many eyeballs as possible on their particular outlet.

It also didn’t help that a lot of people on social media wouldn’t wait for any kind of verification before repeating it ad nauseam on their respective profiles. How many times was Ryan Lanza’s Facebook passed around before it was confirmed that his brother was the shooter? We weren’t exactly helping ourselves with that one.

THE VICTIMS: Let’s never forget who this is really about. It’s not about your religion or lack of one and it’s not about your political views or your favorite politician. It’s about the over two dozen people, mostly small children who tragically and needlessly lost their lives on Friday.

One name I purposely left off the victims list was Nancy Lanza and not for reasons you may think. She most definitely was a victim. Please keep that in mind as the Lanza family has to also deal with this tragedy. Ryan Lanza and his father not only lost a son and brother and a mother and (ex-)wife but will probably live with the guilt of this tragedy. Please keep them included with your prayers and thoughts of the all the victims.
